The Concept

This design was developed for clients who wished to create and sell a site on their land, in a premium location in South Belfast. It was successfully awarded planning permission and the site is currently on the market for sale. The proposal is for a house in a secluded, wooded site, surrounded by mature trees, and seeks to provide a contemporary and generously proportioned home for a family. The house has been carefully positioned within the site, affording uninterrupted views of the Lagan Valley Regional Park, with substantial garden space, while the existing mature trees screen it from view of the surrounding properties.

Contemporary & generously proportioned home

The house is contemporary yet understated in style, drawing from the local vernacular in form and materiality. The proposed materials and colours take their cue from the imposing period property in the grounds of which it is to be located, with lime render and a red/brown brick echoing the brick chimneys and render of the adjacent house. The copper-coloured standing seam metal roofing also responds to the colour of the roof tiles of its neighbour, while giving a contemporary feel to the new house.

The house is U-shaped in form, with principal reception rooms and circulation arranged around a central courtyard.  Flexible indoor-outdoor living maximises the southerly aspect and takes maximum advantage of views. Upstairs, bedrooms are arranged in a linear fashion, each having southerly windows and access to a roof terrace. There is also an accessible master suite at ground level, level access and generous corridor widths, meaning that the house can function well on one level for all users.
