The Concept

This tiny, bijoux extension to the rear return of a Belfast terraced house carves the existing yard space into a larger courtyard and a compact bin store off the alley, separated by a new study area. Clever built-in furniture makes the most of the new study space. The rear return kitchen is given a greater sense of space with 400mm deep units to one side, that benefit from deeper worktop due to the windows at sill height.

a sense of space far greater than the compact reality

The kitchen, detailed by Design Onion, won best contemporary kitchen at Ireland’s Kitchen Trade Guide Awards, 2022. We designed it to morph into a window seat as it wraps around the corner windows, into the existing dining area. This corner window, in crittall-style glazing, seamlessly brings two internal spaces together and connects them to the courtyard space beyond, giving a sense of space that is far greater than the compact reality.

Glazed white and green eco bricks by H&E Smith brighten up the courtyard space, while the floor is paved in Antonio Gaudi’s iconic hexagonal street tile. Internally, polished terrazzo flooring, with brass detailing, ties together the kitchen to the new study space, connected by two steps, set at an angle.
