The Concept

EastSide Greenways and the SPACE project at Queen’s University Belfast appointed Studio idir to carry out an engagement study, looking at the Connswater Community Greenway through the lens of Accessibility and Inclusion, with the aim to develop a report of recommendations which can be used to implement changes along the CCG.

Increasing accessibility and inclusion along the greenway

We spoke with project officers from local and national organisations and charities to get their feedback on how they use the CCG with their members. Following a public survey, we developed a two day ‘Wheel and Walkshop,’ inviting people with disabilities and older people to travel along sections of the CCG with us, to chat about their lived-experience of accessing and using the CCG, while mapping and recording findings along the route. Participants in our Workshop came from the RNIB, Orchardville, Mae Murray Foundation, EastSide greenways and QUB, as well as members of the general public.

Collating this rich set of findings, we developed a set of 22 recommendations for improvements or changes that can be made to the CCG to make it more accessible and inclusive, presented in terms of short, medium and long term goals, across three key themes of Addressing User conflict, Enabling Collaborations and Facilitating Placemaking Opportunities. A large poster visual was developed to illustrate these recommendations across the Connswater Community Greenway, and will be used alongside the full report to present our recommendations to the public during a public event run by EastSide Greenways in July 2024.
