The Concept

The existing mill building complex at Pettigo, Donegal, dating from around 1850, was in use until approximately 1960, and has since fallen into significant disrepair. Located on the river Termon, which provided power to the mill, this project involves proposals for the re-use and re-purposing of the existing mill complex, to give new purpose to the buildings, in order to preserve their heritage. The complex comprises of 3 existing disused mill buildings, and the remains of the previous mill race, including a corn mill, a saw mill and the former mill keepers cottage, with a disused forge on the lower ground floor. All 3 buildings in the complex are on the Record of Protected Structures in Ireland.

Seeking to respect the existing built form

Our proposals look at the adaptive reuse of the mill buildings, to provide a new restaurant, and associated kitchen and storage, the provision of co-working spaces, and ancillary facilities including a coffee area, a bar area and some industrial heritage display areas. Seeking to respect the existing built form, it is proposed to connect all three buildings with a new covered atrium, with a glazed roof, and a flat roofed extension on the lower ground floor between the saw mill and the mill keepers cottage.

The new glazed roof echoes the existing roof forms, while flooding the interior common space with light, and providing a connecting space between all three buildings.

The project also includes proposed overnight accommodation in a new build element, to the north east part of the site, proposing single storey bedrooms.
