The Concept

These clients had a kitchen so cold that they could see the steam from their breath at the breakfast table in the mornings. Something needed to be done. Originally, they had plans drawn up by another architect, but approached Studio idir for some fresh thinking and new ideas.

The design hugely improved the flow in the house

The eaves flushglaze rooflight brings a ‘wow factor’

The idea that unlocked the new design was to convert a small toilet by the front door into the access to the newly extended kitchen/dining/living space, rather than having to walk the previous circuitous route along the hall and around the stairs (as can be seen on the before and after plans, below).  This hugely improved the flow in the house and allowed a shower room and utility/pantry to be tucked into the darkest central parts of the plan.

Wow factor is brought to the L-shaped extension through an eaves flushglaze rooflight, from Glazing Vision, that gives an uninterrupted view of the garden and sky from the dining area. A fitted bookcase and storage run the length of the boundary wall, bringing lots of personality to this room. Externally, a covered verandah area gives shelter at the large sliding doors and reduces the risk of overheating.
